The pathogen is the non-specialized necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea, which infects inflorescences, berries, shoots, and rachises. Berry infection leads to soft, watery rot accompanied by the appearance of a characteristic ash-grey fungal bloom, while on shoots and rachises, the fungus causes tissue discoloration followed by necrosis. The infection also poses a threat during nursery production, hindering proper callus formation at graft unions.

Resistance to the disease is a quantitative trait depending on the morphological features of the cultivar, such as cluster compactness and berry skin thickness, as well as the presence of antifungal compounds. In winemaking, the fungus can induce 'noble rot,' which promotes berry shriveling; however, on red varieties, its development is considered a negative factor due to the degradation of pigments.
