Cultivation
Green manures are plants grown to improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil and to accumulate organic matter, rather than for a commercial harvest. They function as green manure, provide soil structure, and contribute to phytosanitary improvement.
Mentioned in descriptions 1 218 varieties reference book.
Green manures are plants cultivated to enrich the soil with organic matter and nutrients, serving as a 'green manure'. Their effect is manifested in the improvement of soil structure, increased aeration and water permeability due to the development of a root system acting as biological tillage, as well as in the suppression of weed growth.
The choice of crop depends on the crop rotation, soil type, and specific agronomic objectives. A crucial principle is to avoid sowing a green manure crop from the same botanical family as the subsequent main crop. The efficiency of the selection is determined by agro-climatic conditions: the availability of moisture necessary for residue decomposition and the suitability of the crop species (legumes, crucifers, or cereals) for specific soil characteristics, whether sandy, chernozem, or saline soils.
The evaluation of green manure effectiveness is based on the ability of plants to accumulate nitrogen through nodule bacteria or to rapidly increase green mass for the suppression of pathogens and weeds. The sustainability and productivity of the system depend on the mowing phase, which optimally occurs during the budding or early flowering stage. The subsequent incorporation of plant biomass, performed by discing, plowing, or undercutting, requires consideration of soil needs, where legumes serve as a source of nitrogen, while cereal crops influence the nutrient balance in the subsequent crop rotation.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
