Grapevine Tolerance

The ability of a grapevine to withstand biotic and abiotic stresses without significant loss of productivity, while the plant may still show visible symptoms of infection.

To evaluate grapevine tolerance, OIV scoring scales are used, where intermediate values (3 points) indicate the variety's ability to withstand pathogen impact without a catastrophic yield reduction. In physiological and biochemical studies, indicators such as superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activity, malondialdehyde content, chlorophyll fluorescence level Fv/Fm, and LT50 values are used to determine frost resistance.

High tolerance is characterized by the maintenance of homeostasis and yield in the presence of stressors, an example of which is the resistance of the Pervenets Magaracha variety to phylloxera. Low tolerance manifests through mass bud death, tissue necrosis, and a sharp drop in berry sugar content. The use of tolerant varieties allows for reducing the intensity of chemical protective measures, though it requires consideration of the fact that such plants may remain asymptomatic carriers of infection.
