Pests

Thrips

Thysanoptera

Thrips are small, cryptic, sap-sucking pests that damage plant tissues and transmit viral diseases. Resistance to them is complex and is more often described qualitatively rather than through strict immunity codes.

Mentioned in descriptions 1 399 varieties reference book.

Thrips are small insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that inhabit leaf axils, buds, and flowers. Their presence is manifested by the appearance of silvery discolored spots, streaks, and dots, as well as deformation, leaf curling, and premature shedding of plant organs. Small black dots, which are the pest's excrement, are often visible on the affected parts.

Varietal resistance to thrips is determined by genetically defined physiological and biochemical properties, such as the content of specific metabolites. Unlike many pathogens, there are no generally accepted international resistance codes for thrips; therefore, this trait is usually indicated in descriptions as relative resistance or based on an assessment score of susceptibility.

The degree of plant damage directly depends on external conditions, the age of the crop, and the pressure intensity of the pest population, which is capable of forming new biotypes. Genetic resistance to thrips is polygenic; therefore, under field conditions, even resistant genotypes may demonstrate varying reactions depending on the agro-ecosystem and the overall level of preventive measures.
