Malus Mill.
The ability of apple cultivars to withstand critical winter temperatures without fatal tissue damage. This indicator is dynamic and depends on the dormancy phase, and also varies between the above-ground part of the tree and the root system.

To assess apple frost resistance, the laboratory method of freezing scions during deep dormancy is used, followed by an analysis of tissue browning, rated on a five-point scale. Cultivars from Siberian and Ural breeding programs are capable of withstanding temperatures from -35°C to -45°C, whereas southern cultivars are damaged at temperatures as high as -25°C. The root system is significantly less resistant and suffers at temperatures ranging from -10°C to -16°C.
Apple frost resistance includes the ability to withstand early autumn frosts, winter lows, and freezes occurring during and after thaws, when the plant loses its hardening. Even latent tissue freezing without visible necrosis leads to a decrease in the productivity and longevity of the tree, which necessitates the careful selection of rootstocks and agrotechnical practices in high-risk farming zones.
