Prunus amygdalus x Prunus persica rootstock

Prunus amygdalus x Prunus persica

A group of clonal rootstocks used in intensive orcharding for peach, nectarine, and almond. They are characterized by high vigor, drought tolerance, and the ability to grow in calcareous soils without showing signs of chlorosis.

In the reference 23 varieties crop Prunus amygdalus x Prunus persica, where this is mentioned in the description.

Almond-peach hybrids are characterized by a powerful root system that ensures adaptation to arid conditions and high-pH soils. Trees grafted onto these rootstocks exhibit high growth vigor, which requires summer pruning to prevent canopy density and ensure light penetration to the fruit. The rootstocks provide excellent compatibility with a wide range of peach, nectarine, and almond cultivars, as well as select plum and apricot varieties.

Limitations include high sensitivity to waterlogging and soil oxygen deficiency, as well as the susceptibility of most traditional forms to root-knot nematodes. Unlike seedling rootstocks, these hybrids are propagated vegetatively, which ensures the uniformity of planting material. Some modern breeding forms possess red foliage, which facilitates the identification and removal of root suckers in nurseries.
