Cultivation
Vitis L.
A rootstock in viticulture is the base of the plant, most often a hybrid of American grape species, which provides resistance to phylloxera and adaptation to difficult soil conditions.
In the reference 124 varieties crop Grapevine, where this is mentioned in the description.
The grapevine rootstock forms the root system and the underground trunk, utilizing genetic material from the species V. riparia, V. rupestris, and V. berlandieri. Its primary function is to provide resistance to the root form of phylloxera, making the use of grafting a mandatory prerequisite for vineyard survival. In addition to phylloxera resistance, rootstocks are selected for adaptation to high active lime content, drought conditions, and saline soils.
Selecting a rootstock allows for the regulation of scion vigor, vine ripening dates, bush productivity, and mineral nutrient uptake. A key biological factor for successful grafting is affinity — the degree of compatibility between the rootstock and the scion. At a low level of affinity, issues with tissue union occur, which leads to a decrease in berry sugar content, lower yields, and the development of millerandage.
