Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.
The main methods of apple tree propagation in nurseries, including summer budding with a 'dormant bud' and winter bench grafting, which ensure high survival rates and the production of standard seedlings.
In the reference 83 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.
Summer budding is the most common method of apple tree propagation, showing a bud survival rate of 92–98%. With this method, the bud remains dormant until the following spring, when, after the start of sap flow, the rootstock is cut above the graft union, stimulating bud growth. Budding is usually timed to the period of secondary sap flow, which begins in the second half of July.
Winter bench grafting makes it possible to shorten the seedling production cycle to two years, which is particularly relevant for modern types of planting material. Despite a survival rate of approximately 85.5%, the yield of standard seedlings may be lower than with budding. Apple trees possess high biological compatibility with both seedling and clonal rootstocks, and their buds are less susceptible to winter mortality compared to similar grafts of pear.
