Scion

A scion is the aerial part of a plant in the form of a cutting or bud, taken from a cultivar for grafting onto a rootstock. It is the scion that determines the varietal characteristics of the future plant, such as flavor, yield, and fruit quality.

When caring for such plants, it is critical to control the emergence of rootstock suckers below the graft union to prevent the suppression of the cultural scion.
