Variety traits
Malus Mill.
Apple waxy bloom is an epicuticular protective layer on the fruit skin that reduces transpiration, prevents pathogen penetration, and influences fruit shelf life during storage.
In the reference 18 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.
The thickness of the wax layer on apple fruits varies depending on varietal characteristics, ranging from 2.5 to 4.1 μm when measured microscopically. Wax accumulation is also quantified by mass per unit area, where for high-wax varieties, values reach 290–410 μg/cm².
The biological role of the layer lies in the regulation of moisture loss, which directly influences the fruit's susceptibility to shriveling during storage. The physical barrier of epicuticular wax also limits the penetration of fungal disease spores and correlates with resistance to the development of superficial scald.
In breeding practice, the intensity of the bloom is evaluated organoleptically as weak, medium, or intense, with characteristics described as "matte," "glossy," or "greasy." Compromising the integrity of this coating through mechanical impact leads to increased susceptibility of the fruit to post-harvest rots.
