Successful overwintering of grapes is impossible without preliminary preparation, which includes the phase of natural hardening after -5...-8°C frosts and complete vine lignification. The most important stage is proper pruning and bending of the vines to the ground, which requires planning the vine training system at the planting stage.

A key condition for this crop is the exclusion of wetting and rotting of the buds, so dry covering methods without contact with moist soil are preferred. The cover acts as a thermos, smoothing out temperature fluctuations that could trigger premature sap flow.

Incorrect timing of covering and high humidity under the material provoke the development of spotted necrosis and bud death. In addition, in regions with deep soil freezing, the root system requires protection in addition to the vines, which is ensured by deep planting or mulching.
