Winter Hardiness of Apple

A complex biological trait of the apple tree that determines a cultivar's resistance to a combination of early frosts, critical mid-winter temperatures, thaws, and subsequent recurring cold spells.

To evaluate the winter hardiness of apple trees, the field method of visual assessment of damage after severe winters and the laboratory method of artificial freezing in climate chambers are used. Results are expressed in points on a tissue damage scale: from 0 points for no damage to 5 points for critical necrosis.

Highly winter-hardy apple cultivars must possess resistance in four components, including the ability to withstand early frosts down to -30°C, critical temperatures down to -40°C in mid-winter, and maintain viability during recurring frosts down to -28°C after periods of thaw.

Winter hardiness is a limiting factor for the productivity and longevity of apple trees, as even partial freezing of wood and buds triggers necrosis and reduces yield. The level of resistance depends on the genetic characteristics of the cultivar, the rootstock used, the physiological state of the tree, and agricultural practices.
