Grape Phylloxera

A quarantine pest Dactylosphaera vitifoliae, infesting the roots and leaves of grapevines. The root form causes the formation of nodosities and tuberosities, leading to vine death.

Grape phylloxera exists in two forms: a root form, which causes the formation of root swellings known as nodosities and necrotic growths called tuberosities, and a leaf form, which causes galls to develop on the foliage. Damage to the roots by the insect's enzymes facilitates the entry of pathogens and leads to the death of the vine within a few years.

Modern resistance breeding is based on the use of molecular markers for pyramiding resistance loci. Genes Rdv2 (chromosome 14), Rdv3, and Rdv4, responsible for resistance to the leaf form, have been identified, as well as genes Rdv5–Rdv8, which provide resistance to the root form, often derived from Muscadinia rotundifolia species.
