Prunus cerasus L.
A fungal disease of cherry, caused primarily by Monilinia laxa, occurring in the forms of blossom blight and fruit rot.

The primary causal agent of blossom blight in cherry is the fungus Monilinia laxa, though Monilinia fructigena may also be found on the crop. The disease manifests in two forms: spring blossom blight, characterized by the sudden wilting and drying of flowers, shoots, and fruit spurs, and fruit rot, which affects maturing fruit.
In the case of blossom blight, the infection enters through the stigma of the flower, spreading into the branch tissues, which often leads to gummosis and bark cracking. With fruit rot, brown spots form on the berries, which, under high humidity conditions, become covered with grayish sporulation tufts, after which the fruits become mummified.
Specific resistance genes to this disease in sour cherry have not been identified. The level of resistance in cultivars is defined as relative or complex and is evaluated during field trials without the use of genetic markers.
