Pear Grafting and Budding

Pyrus communis L.

Pear grafting is characterized by high sensitivity to the biological compatibility of rootstocks, especially when working with quince, which requires the use of interstocks. Success in propagation is critically dependent on the precise alignment of cambial layers and the correct selection of cultiv…

In the reference 66 varieties crop European pear, where this is mentioned in the description.

A key feature of pear propagation is the frequent incompatibility of cultivars with quince rootstocks, which manifests as uneven thickening at the graft union, tissue necrosis, and the risk of tree breakage. To overcome this, compatible intermediate cultivars (interstocks) are used. Combinations of 'pear on pear' possess reliable biological compatibility, whereas the use of rowan or cotoneaster is often experimental and requires specific crown formation techniques.

Pear budding technology in nurseries requires high speed of operation, as the cambium of the crop is sensitive to desiccation. An important factor is the consideration of biorhythms: grafting cultivars with sharply differing maturation periods onto a single tree is unacceptable, as it causes an imbalance in physiological processes. The use of apple as a rootstock is considered unreliable due to significant differences in growth rate and wood structure, leading to tissue rejection.
