Grape bloom

Vitis vinifera L.

Grape bloom (pruine) is a natural epicuticular layer on the surface of berries, shoots, and leaves, which performs a protective function and serves as an indicator of maturity.

For grapes, the presence of bloom is critical for the storage and transportation of table varieties, as an intact wax layer prevents moisture transpiration and mechanical damage. In agronomy, the intensity of the bloom serves as a visual indicator that the berries have reached physiological maturity.

Agronomic assessment requires distinguishing natural bloom from Oidium mycelium, which appears as easily removable "white dust" and has a characteristic musty odor. In scientific practice, wax extraction using solvents, scanning electron microscopy, and expert scoring scales of intensity are used to analyze the bloom.
