Vigor and Training Height of Grapevines

Vitis vinifera L.

For grapevines, the concept of 'bush height' as a varietal trait does not exist, as the habitus is determined by the training system. In agronomy, a distinction is made between biological shoot vigor and technical trunk height.

Training height is an agrotechnical decision that depends on climatic conditions, the type of training, and the level of mechanization. Low training systems with a trunk height of 20–60 cm are more susceptible to the risk of spring frosts, whereas high training systems exceeding 120 cm improve vine aeration and reduce the infectious background.
