Winter Hardiness of Rhododendron

A complex indicator of the ability of rhododendrons to withstand low temperatures, fluctuating conditions, and wind. It includes an assessment of the survival of flower buds and tissues, which depends on the age of the plant and whether it belongs to the evergreen or deciduous groups.

To assess the winter hardiness of rhododendrons, a 7-point visual damage scale is used, taking into account the condition of shoots and the aerial part, as well as physiological and biochemical methods such as impedance spectroscopy, electrolyte leakage tests, and analysis of dehydrin protein and sugar accumulation.

The winter hardiness of the crop is subject to age-related changes: young plants aged 3–5 years possess significantly lower resistance than specimens older than 10 years. At the same time, the ability to withstand frost varies from tolerance below –30…–34°C in Finnish hybrids to sensitivity to temperatures above –15…–20°C in heat-loving cultivars.

During cultivation, winter hardiness is determined by the microclimate of the site, including protection from winds and the absence of cold air stagnation. An important factor is the water regime, as excess moisture or a lack of winter preparation caused by late growth reduces the plant's adaptive potential.
