Weevils are a family of insects that damage all plant parts at various stages of development. Varietal resistance to them is determined by anatomical and biochemical characteristics, although there is no unified international coding system for such resistance.
Mentioned in descriptions 387 varieties reference book.
Weevils constitute a vast family of insects whose adults and larvae damage any organs of cultivated plants, including buds, leaves, flower buds, fruits, and seeds. External symptoms of damage manifest as "weeping buds," drying of flower buds due to consumption, leaf shot-holes, as well as internal galleries in grains or fruits, which can lead to plant death if growing points are affected.
Varietal resistance to these pests is based on physiological and biochemical characteristics, such as the presence of specific metabolites and enzymes, as well as anatomical and morphological features: tissue density, degree of pubescence, and waxy bloom. In breeding, the resistance level is assessed by comparison with a susceptible control under identical conditions, and it can be both specific and polygenic in its buffering nature.
A unified international coding system for weevil resistance is not presented in open publications; therefore, information on varietal resistance is mostly descriptive, based on results of multi-year field trials. Selecting a specific cultivar in high infestation zones requires consultation with the originator, as the degree of resistance is a relative value dependent on agronomic practices, plant age, weather conditions, and potential evolution of pest biotypes.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
