Sweet Cherry Rootstock

Prunus avium (L.) L.

Selecting a rootstock for sweet cherries determines cultivar compatibility, tree vigor, and the potential for early fruiting. The use of clonal rootstocks allows for the management of canopy size and adaptation of the crop to specific soil conditions.

In the reference 111 varieties crop Sweet cherry, where this is mentioned in the description.

For sweet cherries, selective compatibility between cultivars and rootstock forms is critical. Traditional seedling rootstocks, such as Mahaleb cherry (Prunus mahaleb), often exhibit incompatibility with modern cultivars and produce vigorous trees with delayed fruiting. Shifting to clonal rootstocks, such as VSL-2 or the Gisela series, allows for a 20–50% reduction in vigor and enables the production of commercial yields as early as the second year.

Rootstock selection determines the tree's adaptation to soil and pests. Mahaleb is effective in light soils but is sensitive to waterlogging, whereas the VSL-2 rootstock tolerates dense and moist soils and possesses resistance to white grubs due to the presence of alkaloids. At the same time, Gisela series rootstocks require strict irrigation management, as high productivity on these stocks can lead to smaller fruit size under moisture deficit.
