Drought Tolerance of Grapevine

Vitis vinifera L.

The ability of grapevine to maintain metabolic processes and productivity under moisture deficit, evaluated through physiological and biochemical parameters of water exchange and tissue stress tolerance.

In the reference 43 varieties crop Common grape vine, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate the drought tolerance of grapevine varieties, methods for determining leaf water-holding capacity, water deficit, and relative turgidity are used. Key physiological stress markers include electrolyte leakage from cells, chlorophyll stability index, malondialdehyde content, and abscisic acid levels. Modern research also employs express testing of intact leaves using osmotics, such as sorbitol or polyethylene glycol solutions.

Stability assessment is carried out using a comparative method, where varieties with high adaptability are taken as a reference. Varieties with high drought tolerance, such as 'Kristall', 'Dostoyny', 'Vostorg', or 'Tsitronny Magaracha', are characterized by lower electrolyte leakage and higher chlorophyll stability under stress compared to susceptible varieties like 'Cabernet Sauvignon'.

Moisture deficiency has a significant impact on the agrobiological indicators of grapevine: excessive water stress inhibits vegetative growth, reduces sugar accumulation and berry acidity, which negatively affects the quality of winemaking products. To maintain a stable yield under drought conditions, it is necessary to select adaptive varieties and use specialized rootstocks capable of efficiently utilizing soil resources.
