Pests

Phylloxera

Daktulosphaira vitifoliae

Phylloxera is a quarantine pest of grapes in the form of a small aphid that attacks roots and leaves. The root form causes the formation of nodules, root rot, and vine death, making it critically dangerous for European varieties.

Mentioned in descriptions 895 varieties reference book.

Phylloxera is a small aphid that develops in both root and leaf forms. The root form is the most dangerous, as it causes the formation of nodules and tuberosities, through which soil pathogens penetrate, leading to the death of the plant. The leaf form manifests as galls on the leaves, which weaken photosynthesis and reduce yields.

Resistance of grapes to the pest is a polygenic trait determined by the plant's ability to rapidly form wound periderm at bite sites, which blocks the penetration of putrefactive microorganisms. Evaluation of resistance is conducted using specialized scales ranging from complete immunity to tolerance, in which the variety maintains productivity despite infestation.

The degree of damage depends on the biological characteristics of the variety, the presence of active races of the pest in the soil, and the physical characteristics of the environment. Sandy soils restrict the movement of the aphid, providing natural protection for plantations, while in infected zones, the primary control method remains the use of grafted seedlings on phylloxera-resistant rootstocks.
