Depending on the rootstock type, plants can range from vigorous with high longevity to dwarf, suitable for intensive orchards that require support.

The effectiveness of a rootstock depends on its adaptation to the soil and climatic conditions of the site, including response to groundwater levels, salinity, as well as winter hardiness and drought tolerance. An important factor is resistance to specific soil pathogens, which in many crops is provided precisely by the rootstock.

The choice of rootstock is evaluated through the scion-rootstock combination and the orchard's technological map. Vigorous seedling rootstocks provide longevity, while clonal rootstocks allow for controlling growth vigor and accelerating yield. A poor selection can lead to incompatibility, reduced productivity, or tree death.
