Grey Mold of Grapevine

Vitis vinifera L.

A fungal disease of grapevines caused by Botrytis cinerea, affecting all green vine organs and berries. The development of the pathogen depends on the physicochemical properties of the cultivar, with resistance being polygenic in nature.

In the reference 544 varieties crop Common grape vine, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of the disease is the fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers., the perfect stage of which is known as Botryotinia fuckeliana (de Bary) Whetzel. The pathogen infects inflorescences, causing them to wither, as well as leaves and shoots, where it forms necrotic spots and causes discoloration of the bast. The most severe damage is inflicted on the berries, where the fungus penetrates through injuries, causing rot and covering the fruits with a characteristic grey mold.

Resistance of grapevines to grey mold is a complex trait depending on cluster density, berry skin thickness, and biochemical composition, including eugenol content. Unlike other diseases, no specific resistance gene designations are used for grey mold, and breeding evaluation is carried out using scoring scales. Under certain weather conditions, moderate development of the fungus on ripe berries leads to the formation of what is known as noble rot.
