The pest is diagnosed by colonies on the underside of leaves, the presence of a sticky honeydew coating, and ant activity.

The effectiveness of varietal protection depends on the type of mechanisms: vertical, which provides specific immunity to certain races, or horizontal, which creates general buffer resistance through the plant's physiological and biochemical properties.
