Castanea sativa Mill.
A disease, also known as ink disease, is caused by oomycetes of the genus Phytophthora and is manifested by necrosis of the root collar bark, exudation of dark fluid, and death of the root system.

The primary pathogens of ink disease in sweet chestnut are the oomycetes Phytophthora cinnamomi and Phytophthora cambivora, with cases of infection by P. cactorum, P. cryptogea, and P. plurivora also being recorded. Pathogens attack the root system and the root collar, causing blackening of the roots and the formation of necrotic lesions on the lower part of the trunk.
Symptoms of the disease include bark cracking with the discharge of a characteristic dark “ink” exudate, general tree wilting, yellowing of the foliage, and the formation of abundant epicormic shoots on the trunk. In the process of degradation, both individual branches and the entire tree dry out.
Resistance to Phytophthora root rot in sweet chestnut is a polygenic trait determined by a set of quantitative trait loci (QTL). Scientists are studying the expression of candidate genes, such as Cast_Gnk2-like, whose differential activity determines the level of susceptibility of specific genotypes compared to resistant Asian species.
