Grapevine Nematodes

Nematodes are pests of grapevines that infest the root system and act as vectors for viral diseases, such as grapevine fanleaf degeneration. Their harmful impact is manifested in growth suppression, chlorosis, and the formation of specific galls or necroses on the roots.

Both endoparasitic and ectoparasitic nematodes parasitize grapevines, with the most dangerous being root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), which form galls on roots, and dagger nematodes (Xiphinema index), which transmit the grapevine fanleaf virus. Infestation by lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.) leads to root darkening and necrosis, which, in combination with viral and fungal infections, significantly weakens the plant.

Diagnosis is complicated by the absence of specific aerial symptoms, which are often limited to general stunting and signs of nutrient deficiency. In breeding programs, resistance genes from wild Vitis species are used to control the pest, such as the MJR1 locus on chromosome 18 and the dominant N allele present in several popular rootstocks. The effectiveness of these defense mechanisms may decrease due to the emergence of virulent nematode populations capable of overcoming the genetic resistance of rootstocks.
