Spider mite

Tetranychus urticae

The spider mite is an arachnid that damages plants by sucking out cell sap and chlorophyll. The damage manifests as yellowing, curling, and drying of leaves, which leads to a significant reduction in yield.

Mentioned in descriptions 1 326 varieties reference book.

The spider mite is a dangerous pest that pierces the leaf epidermis and sucks out cell sap, leading to the destruction of chloroplasts and the inhibition of photosynthesis. Initial signs of infestation include the appearance of small light spots on the upper side of the leaf. In advanced cases, a fine web and colonies of the pest are found on the underside of the leaf, and the plant itself turns yellow, dries up, and can lose up to 60% of its yield.

The rate of reproduction and the degree of damage directly depend on temperature and humidity: at +25...+30°C and humidity below 60%, the pest's development cycle shortens to 5–7 days. A favorable factor for mite feeding is excessive nitrogen nutrition, which makes plant tissues looser. Furthermore, crop vulnerability often depends on agronomic practices, as mites are prone to developing resistance rapidly.

A variety's resistance to spider mites is determined by morphological features, such as leaf blade density or the presence of trichomes, as well as biochemical characteristics. No unified international coding system for such resistance exists; therefore, in descriptions, it is usually assessed qualitatively as "tolerance" or "relative resistance." When selecting a variety, it is recommended to clarify the evaluation methodology, including the conditions of field trials or artificial infestation.
